Failed 12 V PSU Brick

Post by TerryJC »

A power outage occurred today (see viewtopic.php?f=13&t=39#p398) and after that there was no sound from the Bells or the music. On investigation we diagnosed the 12 V DC PSU brick which supplies the audio amps and Quarter Jack solenoids. This has been replaced with a temporary alternative and two replacements (One to substitute here and one spare) have been ordered, see http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172768706685.

It is not known what caused the outage, but it is possible that the PSU Brick failed and took out the site. This of course shouldn't happen, but the fuse in the brick mains plug was 13 A instead of 5 A as it should have been, but whether that would have helped is debatable.

The consensus is that the mains system needs a bit of a review.

The replacement PSUs that I ordered on Tuesday failed to arrive and then I got an email from the supplier saying that they had 'retrieved them from the carrier because there had been failures during batch testing'. (Personally I think that they just forgot to dispatch them, because they are still selling the same item.)

On principle, I refused to re-order from the same supplier, so the new order is with a supplier with a lot more brownie points see http://www.ebay.com/itm/253064517571?rmvSB=true. They are expected on Wednesday or Thursday next week.

I have now replaced the temporary 12 V DC Power brick with one of the new ones and put the second one into the spares box in the Model Railway Tool Store.
