A tip off from someone on the Raspberry Pi Forums has allowed me to simplify the network design significantly. It is possible with a Raspberry Pi to set up what is effectively an Ethernet network using only a USB Cable. As far as I know this is fairly unique; I was unable to find any references to doing this for any other device. The details of how this can be done are described in viewtopic.php?p=4615#p4615.
As a result of this, the design no longer needs a Cat 5 Cable or even more importantly a USB / Ethernet Adaptor. Instead a very cheap micro USB to Type A USB Cable and a bit of configuration provides a perfectly usable network connection between the two Pis.
