Hi,
We're a new team of 3 working on this. Our current idea is a Brushed DC motor which will have an induced current via an impeller that will produce microvolt readings we can amplify via an Op-Amp to hundreds of millivolts and then calculate the flow rate using a PI - Zero.

Your idea is an interesting one and provided you can generate enough induced current it will, of course work.
There aren’t enough details of your proposed design for me to comment further but I’m very interested to see how you get on. Perhaps when you get together next you could sketch out your proposal.

We went through several permutations of the impellor and supports, trying to ensure there was sufficient support without hindering the flow rate of water, by the support beams. This took a considerable amount of time as we had GCSEs and A level pupils using the 3D printer continously and we had to contend with my lack of CAD skills.
We figured the diameter of the supports would be better if they were smaller than the tube, as the glue can be used to fill out the gaps and it made accessing it for repairs a little more simple.
Initially when designing the impellor around the motor we thought we would need a small bearing to spin it on however the hole created from the 3D printer was sufficient.
We looked at how to house the the electronics and came up with the orange solution below for a pi0. The insert created another barrier against water. I haven't yet printed the lid but this simply goes over the top and has sides. We considered using some screw fittings between the pipe and housing as well as making the housing part of the pipe however we figured we would get more accurate readings if we placed the pipe inside the housing.
To be more accurate this may need to be reconsidered in future prototypes.
We need to look at the data and how to waterproof the electronics from the pipe

Thank you for the post, I can see you have been very busy and have made progress, which is great to see.
A sketch of your proposed system would be very helpful for me to understand your overall concept.
Take care if you are using FDM prints to house something you don’t want to get wet, water especially if its under pressure, will get through FDM layers.
