I would suggest maybe downgrading back to ADSL - it was faster than what we have now. I guess there's a reason why we can't/shouldn't do that though or we'd have already done it.

Hamish

Our connection has not changed from what it was and will not until OpenReach sort themselves out. The new router handles both ADSL and VDSL so switch over if and when it happens will be transparent to us.
I can’t account for the current lack of performance. If you can give me some performance numbers over a significant period I can try bending the ISPs ear over it but their performance promises are vague at the best of times.

Should maybe take some more scientific readings, but I've observed we get around:

1 MB/s down (8 Mbps)
50 KB/s up (0.5 Mbps)

The uplink speed is really the part that's the problem - it's slow enough that sometimes timeouts occur and it just hangs. This doesn't happen often though, so whether it's worth taking the time to pester them at the moment is debatable - the system is usable for the most part, if a bit frustrating.

Okay, things are a lot better now the internet connection is faster. Transferring a 50MB file of zeros from home to sumppi and back over scp got these speeds:

470 KB/s down (~4 Mbps)
460 KB/s up (~4 Mbps)

These can't be compared directly to the above figure because that was just testing the internet connection speed, rather than using scp and the VPN to transfer data. This is much better, and should be much more pleasant to use.

Pretty good I would say, but not before time.

Hamish,

Are you still setting the MTU value to 576 when using the VPN?

Hi Terry,

Yes, I am. I've not logged in for a few weeks mind. Do I not need to do that any more?

Well I've been using it too, but it occurred to me that we might not need it now that the bandwidth is half decent.

Good point. I've just got it in a script so it's no hassle for me to do it either way. Maybe I'll have a go soon without it.

I haven't been moving anything substantial, so I doubt it would show up anyway.
