Ethernet cable plugs/connectors

Post by hamishmb »

Hi,

As it came up today at the model town, I remembered that I recently bought some new RJ45 plugs - my old ones are total garbage. According to reviews on eBay, it might that some some of these plugs are not RJ45-spec-compliant. Here is a link and a photo of what I bought. These seem much more reliable, so might be worth the £2.99 investment for cable ends.

Link to the plugs:

They are a little bit awkward to insert the wires into, but they make much better contact and don't slip out.

Hamish,

Thanks.

We will be needing to make off the ends of quite a few Cat 5 cables in the coming months.

I did realise actually that thee do slip out a little bit, but they are much better than what I had before - which are the same as what you used for the model town, I think - so would still recommend :)

Hamish,

Are these really £2.99 for 100? Seems a bit too good to be true. Do they come with a crimp tool? I see it being referenced, but I can't see that it is included.

I've just checked on RS and they are selling Cat 5e male crimp connectors, for a bit over twice the price see https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products ... lsrc=aw.ds. Still a lot cheaper than I was expecting, but these are Cat 5e whereas the eBay ones appear to be Cat 5.

Which ones; the eBay cheapies or the RS ones?

Either way, we probably won't need 100. What do you think if it's the RS ones - 6 packs (30 ends)?

lets try the RS ones, they should be of an assured quality, 30 should be enough.

OK. Do you have a crimp tool, or should I get one of those too?
