Overall System Configuration - As Implemented

Post by TerryJC »

I have started a new Topic for this to replace the Suggested System Configuration Topic (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=63) because this design is no longer a suggestion after the work carried out over the past weeks and months.

I have therefore updated the Overall System Configuration diagram (see attached) to better reflect the way the system is shaping up. In this diagram I have made the following changes:
  • Page 1 remains virtually unchanged apart from the addition of X-refs.
  • Page 2 has the following changes:
    • The pipe from the Railway Room Butts Farm now shows a Ball Valve and a Gate Valve at the Wendy Street end - as per the work we commenced this morning.
    • The pipe from the Stage Butts now shows the Ball Valve and a Gate Valve at the Wendy Street end - as per the work we commenced this morning.
    • The pipe to and from the RHS of the Pump matrix now goes straight to the Sump as discussed this morning.
    • The pipe from the Wendy Street Butts now shows the Ball Valve and Gate Valve upstream from the junction with the Pump inlet/outlet - as discussed this morning.
    • Minor layout changes to clarify the arrangement.
  • Page 3 has an addtional Note to clarify the means by which water will be moved.
  • Page 4 shows the Power and Ethernet arrangements now that it has been decided to drop PoE for the Wendy Street Butts Pi.
Please let me know if you have any comments.

Good reference document, thanks Terry.

BTW I made some progress this afternoon in solving this mornings unexpected challenges and in sourcing appropriate parts.

I have produced a new version of the Overall System Configuration Diagram (see attached). In this, I have attempted to include all of the devices that will eventually form part of the River System (and one device (the Webserver)) that will be utilised by the system. I have also updated the config file used by the software to identify all of the devices to reflect the complete system as it will be, although this is mostly in the associated docstrings until the devices actually exist. Here is what the docstrings say on the subject:

Code: Select all

I've just noticed errors in my list, so have updated below.

Re: Overall System Configuration - As Implemented

Post by TerryJC »

I've been reviewing the configuration of this system as I learn things from the ongoing work on the Gate Valve and have realised that the Ethernet Switch required at the rear of the Wendy House will eventually need at least eleven ports (see Sheets 5 & 6 of the Overall System Configuration diagram (updated version attached)). These include a port for the armoured cable from the Railway Room, another port for the armoured cable to the Gazebo, one for the cable from the sump, one for the cable to the Wendy House Butts Pi and seven Gate Valves. Penri, I recall you saying that you have a 12-port Switch at home; do you still have it?

The addition of this switch to the system brings with it some new logistical problems. The 5-port domestic switches (of which we currently have three) run from a DC voltage (typically 5 V or 12 V), which we can derive from the main 12 V source for the Gate Valves, etc. However, the bigger switches generally need a mains supply, (which we have behind Wendy Street), but we will still need a fairly meaty 12 V supply for the Wendy Street Butts Pi (including the Level Sensors) and the Gate Valves. Looking at the worst case scenario, I think that we would need to provision for at least 5 or 6 A, and preferably a bit more to allow for surges when the Actuators come on. However, we should never need to energise more than two Gate Valves at the same time, so this requirement would reduce to 2 to 3 A. I can ensure that Gate Valves are only ever energised in pairs in the software, but if the software failed we might end up overloading the PSU.

Either way, we will need to ensure that the Ethernet Switch and the 12 V PSU are housed in an IP65 case, because there will be mains on the input side, so water inside would constitute a Safety Hazard.

Any thoughts?

Hello

Sorry for late reply, it's been a bit busy at home.

Yes I still have the Switch, its 16 port.

Agreed that a suitable outdoor rated enclosure will be needed, with perhaps additional current limit protection for the 12V lines.

Attached is the updated version of the Overall System Diagram. This shows the two additional functions mentioned by Penri in viewtopic.php?f=15&p=2160#p2159; the Gazebo Pump and the solenoid operated mains water fill valve.
