Integration of Webserver and River System Networks

Post by TerryJC »

This morning the armoured cable that connected the WiFi Antenna (behind the Gazebo) to the Webserver (in the Railway Room Store) was severed and connected to the patch panel inside the big IP65 box that houses the main PSUs and Ethernet Switch. Initially, we simply linked the cable together again using a single Cat 5 drop cable and checked that webserver was still working. It was and connecting to WMT_Guest behaved normally and provided access to the Audio Guide etc.

We then removed the WiFi Router that we'd been using to access the River System and linked the armoured cable into the switch. We first checked the webserver functionality again and we then checked all four Pis using the phone apps and finally I SSHd into Sump Pi and Wendy Butts Pi and was able to tail the logs. While we were there the Gate Valve was observed to operate.

We will monitor this for a while and revert the system if there are any unexplained effects. Otherwise it looks as if we have taken another step forward.

On a related topic, it would be useful to improve the WiFi coverage at WMT, so I am investigating obtaining a second Antenna to use as an extender.
