File storage on this web server

Post by hamishmb »

After some discussion, we have decided it would be good to store WMT-related files on this web server if possible, instead of at www.hadrian-way.co.uk.

As such, we have uploaded the files currently available at www.hadrian-way.co.uk, to https://wmtprojectsforum.altervista.org/files, where you can now browse and download most of the files. The only exceptions are really large files like SD card backups and the cross-compile environment for the NAS box. The idea is that most of our development files will be easier to find and organise if they are in folders, rather than attached to topics like they have been.

In order to upload, you need an FTP account and an FTP client like FileZilla. Most file managers can connect to FTP servers as well. These have not been set up yet, so currently only Terry and I have upload access. I will shortly begin trawling through our forum posts and uploading the files to the relevant folders on the server.

NOTES:
  • 1. It is highly recommended that you connect using FTPS if possible, because this will encrypt your connection. The credentials are the same as with normal FTP.
  • 2. If you want to upload anything big (say, over 30MB), please compress it! I recommend using .tar.xz format with the maximum compression option, because this compresses really well, despite being slower than other methods.

I have uploaded everything relevant that I could find, and combined that with what was at www.hadrian-way.co.uk.

I've tried to organise it as well as I can, so hopefully it makes sense, and people can find what they want. If not, let me know/feel free to try to re-organise it :)

Although Terry did explain that this file storage exists, I forgot about it, and it took me quite a while to stumble across it again, searching for the Installation Specification.

To make these files easier to find, I propose to edit the first paragraph of the Documentation section in the README.md file in the git repository to read as follows:

Code: Select all

Most of the documentation for this project is available at
https://wmtprojectsforum.altervista.org/files/, along with
the Design and Requirements documents. Old versions of the
code from before this repository was opened can be found
there as well. Some of the older files can also be found at
http://www.hadrian-way.co.uk/WMT_River_System_Development/.
