Re: Requirements for Proposed Replacement NAS Box

From looking at the prices on https://linitx.com/ a new one would almost certainly be too expensive, especially if we also had to bu a SATA Adaptor. I think my perception of the pricing is a bit skewed because I bought mine when it was already out-of-production and they were getting rid of old stoc...

Re: Requirements for Proposed Replacement NAS Box

Another option for building a NAS is a PC Engines APU, which is an x86 single board computer. (These are distributed in the UK by LinITX.) The main advantage I see with the APU is that the PC-like architecture should in principle make it possible to install arbitrary mainstream Linux distributions, ...

Re: Installation Specification

I just had a read through both of the previous uploads. Most of the changes look fine. With the instruction to put the HDD on SATA port 1 having been removed, the VBoxManage storageattach "[GuestOsMachineName]" --storagectl "SATA" --port 1 --device 0 --nonrotational on --discard ...

Re: (February 2020 onwards) WMT Pi VMs

Unless anything was said to the contrary, I think I would have just used Ark to compress them, using whatever its default settings are for 7z. (Ark is a GUI archive utility for KDE.)

I don't recall there being any special compression settings needed, beyond choosing the archive format...

Re: Water Backup System - Overall Design Strategy

I would suggest defining the times of day for the switchover somewhere in the main config, to avoid having to update all the routines separately in the event of a change to the desired time of day for the backup mode to operate.

Re: Water Backup System - Overall Design Strategy

You would get much of the required functionality for free if the standard logic were in a finished state. The upstream butts groups stop transferring water downstream if the Wendy Butts are close to being full, to avoid an overflow in the event of the Sump suddenly wanting to pump water into the Wen...

My [Patrick's] availability, or lack thereof

I need to address the matter of whether and when I might work on the control logic again, as I have been somewhat in denial about the fact that I haven't been available to do it. I overestimated how much energy I would have to work on things like this during weekday evenings after work. In reality, ...

Re: Installation Specification

The default Debian installation has a swap partition, so whatever you do you will end up needing some kind of instruction about swap configuration, whether that's to remove the swap or to change it to a swap file or to add the discard option to the default swap partition. It seemed an easy enough co...

Re: Installation Specification

Hamish, having discussed this with you in person today, I agreed that it is probably not necessary to customise the package installation to quite the extent specified in the document, and that avoiding doing so makes the instructions easier to follow. However, be careful about simply removing the en...

Re: Documentation queries for the software

I suppose my reading of the situation is that there is limited time in which to produce some documentation. This may be a misreading. So, my previous post was musing about possible priorities that might maximise the benefit from the time available. I don't mean to say we the documentation should be ...
